Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),4 and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.

Preparation for Baptism

Our parish community together with that of our sister parish, St Cuthbert’s on Lytham Road share a common and mandatory baptismal preparation session generally held on the first Tuesday of each month at either the Presbytery at St John Vianney or at St Cuthbert’s Church. This preparation is intended for parents but can also be attended by godparents too.

You will find a leaflet with more information about preparing to celebrate your child’s Baptism at the back of church after Sunday Mass.  Please read this leaflet and complete and drop off the attached form at the Presbytery as soon as possible.

Baptism is usually celebrated at St John Vianney’s church after the Sunday 11.00am Mass (so at 12.30pm.)

Please come to the preparation meeting with a number of options for the possible date of the Baptism. We can have quite a number of Baptisms, and we do not usually have more than two at one time, so we need parents to be flexible with other families involved. We usually confirm the date at the meeting when all families are present preparing for Baptism at the same time.

Do please remember that, as Catholics, we go to Mass on Sundays. Do make yourself more familiar with the parish by attending Mass and parish events. We would be delighted to have you with us.

Do please feel free to speak to the priest after Sunday Mass if you still have any questions.

"Parents, you have asked to have your child baptised. In doing so you are accepting the responsibility of training her in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring her up to keep God's commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbour. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?"
